Day 36 Hoover Dam
I have three words for you about Hoover Dam. Hot. Hot. Hot. Like I’m talkin’ 115 degrees F there. It is also cool, cool, cool. Like I’m talkin’ how they diverted the Colorado River to build the dam by digging 4 water tunnels that led totally around the construction zone and two small dams that left the site completely dry. OR how they finished the whole project 2 years before schedule. OR how they had to use tiny buckets to dump concrete in the walls of the dam (enough cement to make an 8 inch thick sidewalk that would go all the way around the equator). OR how the finished dam was taller than the Great Pyramid. OR how the dam provides enough electricity to power homes throughout Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California.
When we were there, we got to go inside the dam to see the generators and one of the four original diversion tunnels. It was interesting to learn how the water generated so much electricity just by spinning wheels inside huge magnets. The tour ended at a really awesome viewpoint that was right near the new bridge and the top of the dam so you could shoot pictures straight down. Woah! Next we walked across the dam, took pictures of the new bridge and straight down the dam. When we got half way across the river, we walked straight from Nevada into Arizona! We were happy to get into our air-conditioned car after that walk.
